After a period acting in the role, Dale was appointed to the top job at Health New Zealand in July 2025. Before joining Health New Zealand, Dale was CEO at Waitemata Health for more than a decade. He has held other senior roles across the health system, including Chair of the Health Quality & Safety Commission and serving on the national health committee and national ethics committee. In addition, he is a medically qualified, practising public health medicine specialist.
